Dr. Cristina Dieni

Dr. Cristina V. Dieni is a physiologist and neuroscientist originally from Italy, where she earned her PhD in Neurophysiology and Electrophysiology from the University of Perugia, following a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a master’s degree in Pathophysiology. Her scientific curiosity centers on the brain—how it learns, adapts, and changes—with research interests spanning adult neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity, neurosteroids, and the neural circuits that support memory and movement.

She has extensive experience in research and teaching in both Europe and the United States and spent many years at UAB, in Birmingham AL, working alongside outstanding scientists who fueled her passion for neuroscience. She is deeply passionate about mentoring students and guiding them to discover the beauty, creativity, and excitement of brain research.

Outside the classroom and lab, Dr. Dieni enjoys traveling, cooking, knitting, painting and reading. She treasures time spent with her children and her cats, moments that help her recharge and stay inspired. She believes that curiosity fuels both science and life, and she strives to create a learning environment where students feel supported, challenged, and empowered to grow.
