Hello there! My name is Lucy Mwangi, a current Biomedical Science graduate student. I was born and raised in Wichita and have a deep passion for serving my community.

You can find me actively engaging in various roles centered around education, mentorship, and healthcare. I work at Wichita North High School as an AVID tutor and assistant varsity softball coach. I love working with students to develop essential skills needed for the next step in life. Additionally, I serve as president of the Wichita Public Schools Health Science Advisory Board. We collaborate with educators to ensure that students in USD 259 receive the necessary resources and support by bridging gaps between the curriculum and community professionals in related science fields. During the fall 2024 semester, I served as an adjunct lab instructor at Bethel College in Newton, Kansas. It allowed me to return to the lab while taking on a greater responsibility in developing curriculum, which I found both rewarding and enriching. Beyond the education role, I also work at Eye Associates of Wichita as an optometrist assistant, where I assist with preliminary patient assessments and educating them about their eye health before their consultation with the optometrist.

I graduated from Newman University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a pre-medicine concentration in 2023. During my time at Newman, I was on the dance team, a member of multiple clubs on campus, and served as a teacher’s assistant for the microbiology lab. My two favorite places on campus were the Fugate gymnasium and the microbiology lab! Most of my time at Newman was spent in those two places. Fugate gymnasium was the place where I expressed myself through dance and gained valuable friendships for life! In the microbiology lab, I helped students understand one of my favorite areas in biology and even assisted in revamping the TA manual.

In my free time, I love to travel the world. Last summer I spent time in New York City for the first time and I absolutely loved it! If not traveling for leisure, I am often traveling searching for my next concert! I love music and the environment of meeting new people who share the same love! I am an avid reader who enjoys escaping to different worlds through the pages of a book. These experiences—whether in the classroom, on the dance floor, or in a clinical setting—have shaped my dedication to mentoring others and deepened my passion for science and healthcare. I look forward to bringing this same enthusiasm and commitment to my future medical career. My goal is to become a physician at some point soon. While I don’t know exactly what that timeline may look like, I know that I am enjoying my journey to that path!

My biggest advice to anyone here is to take every experience given to you and learn something from it. You never know when life is trying to teach you something!
