Dr. Hem Sharma is originally from Nepal, where he completed his first master’s degree in Zoology, with specialization in Ecology. His academic and research career began with a strong interest in conservation biology and wildlife ecology, particularly the higher animals like – birds and mammals. While conducting ecological research he had observed a variety of wildlife such as – birds, deer, rhinoceroses, elephants, crocodiles, and snakes in natural habitat. With some luck, one might even catch a glimpse of a tiger in the forests of Nepal! Dr. Sharma enjoys sharing those stories from his wildlife adventures whenever he has the opportunity.
For more than a decade, Dr. Sharma taught a variety of biology courses in Nepal. He particularly enjoyed organizing educational field trips, during which he guided students through conservation areas. These experiences allowed students to learn biology beyond the classroom while appreciating the natural beauty and biodiversity of Nepal.
Dr. Sharma later immigrated to Canada with his family, where he completed his second master’s degree and PhD in Biological Sciences with specialization in Microbiology and Biotechnology. Following his PhD, he began working in his long-desired field of teaching. His academic interests are broad and interdisciplinary, spanning from Environmental Microbiology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Health Sciences, to Conservation Biology. He especially enjoys working with students and helping them understand biological concepts through engaging, interactive, and real-world learning experiences.
Outside of work, Dr. Sharma likes reading books, traveling to new places, gardening, and spending time in nature. He also values spending quality time with his family and friends.
